The ‘States as a travel destination have always been enormously under-appreciated, but are particularly worth considering if you’re hoping to work whilst you travel as a digital nomad. Though not the cheapest of countries, America has many of the things that other countries lack that digital nomads can find so frustrating, like a decent Internet connection and a stable, safe environment. Though not the most adventurous choice for a digital nomad, America is a wonderful place to pass through when travelling and working, and can be very good practise for when the budding digital nomad finally leaves town completely to set up shop working from a laptop in some remote, tropical island with an Internet connection.
And it’s not like the US offers nothing for a traveller to enjoy. This is a huge country, and is filled with exciting natural sites of importance, along with a handful of man-made ones. The Grand Canyon from the Hollywood sign all the way to the sights of the Big Apple and the impressive wilderness of Yellowstone Park are all sights that any tourist would love to see, and it’s well worth spending a few months travelling America if you can afford it. And if you’re planning on working as a digital nomad, you should be able to afford it.
This is because in the US there is simply none of the excuses that digital nomads can find themselves making in other countries, like the lack of an Internet connection or other necessary facilities. Here you will almost always be in a position to work: travelling here will be relatively peaceful and organised, and will afford you enough free time to work on whatever you need to work on. There will be a plug socket to charge up your laptop wherever you go, and there will be decent WiFi within a 100-yard radius almost always, as long as you buy a coffee to go with it. Along with that, there are modern facilities and restaurants and entertainment when you’re done with work for the day. America isn’t an adventurous place to travel, but that doesn’t make it any less fun.
The disadvantages to working as a digital nomad in America are obvious, however: the price of living is high and America has a very, very tight grip on their Visa control. So this isn’t a place to set up camp forever. However, we like to see the US as a place where someone could start to practise working as a digital nomad – yes, it may cost a lot, but it’s a good warm-up to testing yourself and seeing if you’re cut out for this kind of job. Travelling whilst working isn’t something everyone can do, and the US is a great place to see if you’re one of them.
So, here’s our advice. If you’re seriously considering working full time whilst travelling as a digital nomad, book yourself in for a month’s holiday in the US and tour the sites as much as you can whilst working as much as you can. Basically, see how you do. If you come back at the end of it with only a load of photographs and no jobs done (or vice versa), bad luck. If you come back with photographs and have got a good portion of work done, congratulations! Start booking your new life.
Good luck, and enjoy!
