Five things to see/do in Gent: The St. Nicholas Church is often referred to as the most beautiful cathedral in the city and definitely merits a visit.
Take a walk around the area known as Korenlie and Graslie. These Medieval-era docksides are lined with many beautiful historic guild houses, and have many cafes and restaurants for a relaxing afternoon or evening.
Climb to the top of the 14th century Belfry and Cloth Hall (Belfort en Lakenhalle) for some spectacular panoramic views of the city.
Check out the Gravensteen – The Castle of the Counts – a medieval castle that originally dates back to the 12th century, and currently houses a museum with a lot of interesting medieval-era memorabilia.
Recently renovated, the Fine Arts Museum (Museum voor Schone Kunsten) offers a fairly impressive collection of art from around the world, with an emphasis on Flemish painters. Other museums worth checking out are the Museum for Contemporary Art (Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst) and the Gent Design Museum.
